Any au pairs that care about children vs. money cars etc…?
We are a family from San Francisco, looking for an au pair from Russia, as I am Russian and want my baby to learn the language. After reading all the posts here, I am not sure we should consider the au pair from Russia. It appears that all au pairs are concerned about money, car and education. What about taking care of a child? Isn?t it the number one priority? Am I missing something?
I feel like the mentality is ?let?s go see US, make money, and by the way take care of children? I think it should be the other way around ?let?s take care of children and by the way see US? As one of the au pairs here posted, that you need to be ? ???????. This is a wrong attitude. I am very glad I found this forum so that i can learn the trith about the au pair view but I am disappointed. I truly wanted to bring an au pair from my native country, who would teach my 14 moth old, play with her and be a “big siter” to her. But how can I, if my child is simply the means of getting into the country. Are there any au pairs out there who actually love children and want to care for them?

I guess au pair program is a big gamble on both sides. I realize that au pair comes to experience the culture and learn the language. I am all for it! However, we are talking about taking care of small children here, in my case a 14 months old. Children feel the attitude towards them. In my view, au pair is someone who enjoys working with children, who has patience and love in her heart for children. She will care for our child, be a part of our family and we in return will show her US and help experience the culture.
In our case for example, we would offer weekend trips to Tahoe to ski with us during winters (not to take care of our child). Of course, all expenses paid, as I hope the au pair would feel as part of our family. During the summer we also travel - Mexico, Hawaii etc. Again, would like our au pair to join us. We would encourage our au pair to participate in the other au pair activities in the area. We would be happy to show her the Bay Area, and if interested arrange the trips to other parts of the US. We would try to accommodate any and all reasonable requests, BUT in return, I hope our au pair won?t be trashing our cars, taking advantage of us, drinking or come hangover on Mondays after wild weekends. And yes, I want the au pair to actually care for my child.
To address some of your points:
Slave - I can?t imagine any one among our friends or acquaintances having a ?slave? mentality towards an au pair, but again we live in San Francisco, one of the most liberal and open minded places in the world, so cannot comment on US as a whole.
Car - that?s an interesting topic. In our situation, I wouldn?t mind giving a car to the au pair only on certain occasions. The cars we have are bmw x5 and bmw 3 both less than a year old. How can I give these cars to an au pair who was in an accident before or simply lacks the experience of driving? The argument ?it was just a scratch on the bumper or broken light?, as one of the au pairs wrote on this site is not going to work, as this scratch will cost us 1,000 to fix, plus increase in insurance premium. I think it?s understandable that not all families are eager to give their cars to the au pair. In addition, the cost of car insurance (it?s illegal to drive without one) for someone so young without driving experience on the cars we have will be $3,000 a year (I actually checked with our insurance). I think it?s a very high risk to give the car to the au pair. Plus public transportation in the Bay Area is very good and reliable.
Over-time ? You are correct au pairs working with small children work the most. We realize that and would try to compensate for it, whether money or time off or some sort of other help. Again, if the au pair cares about my family and my baby is happy i will do whatever i can to make the au pair stay wonderful as well.
I think any au pair signing up for the program should realize that for the host family you are coming to take care of their most precious possession ? child.
As for saving money on a day care vs. au pair this is simply not true. The host family pays $7,000-$8,000 to the agency, plus $500 education. The monthly cost is approximately $1300 - 1500 a month which is the price of the best day care center in the area. Plus, the food and all other extras that you provide for your au pair. So, at least in San Francisco, host families are not motivated by the cost.

хотел бы написать и свое мнение.
1) программу создавали учитывая все те вопросы, о которых вы пишете. и даже о которых вы не пишете. Американцы постарались учесть и те наиболее часто возникающие проблемы - которые возникали у о-пэр в европе (в европе программа работает на много десятилетий больше). Во многом у американских властей это получилось.
2) на форуме конечно обсуждаются чаще всего проблемы, и если уважаемая Ksunata не увидела тут обсуждения вопросов связанных с детьми, это просто отлично!!! Значит у о-пэр редко возникают с этим проблемы
3) о-пэр из снг, действительно одни из самых подготовленных, образованных, мотивированных, любящих детей и очень часто имеющих понятие о том как о них заботится.
4) случаи когда семья может заявить- ты воспользовалась нами для того чтобы приехать сюда и решать свои проблемы, а на наших детей тебе начихать. Таковые проблемы крайне редки и в возможных конфликтах я думаю таких случаев 0.5 процентов из 100
5) ну а теперь о любви к детям....
в моей практике были случаи, когда проявляемая к детям любовь - но самое главное взаимность этой любви была причиной серьезных проблем между семьей и о-пэр. На каком то этапе то..., что девушка относится к ребенку как к своему умиляет , но когда ребенок видя эту доброту и любовь - отвечает тем же (безграничной детской любовью) самой о-пэр.... то это у родителей часто не повод для радости, а повод для грусти, ревности и тому подобное. (просто есть те, кто физически не может дать много внимания детям- работа, заботы. Ну а есть те- кто не хочет дать детям такое же внимание как приехавшая из далекой страны о-пэр).
Были случаи когда семьи (люди же разные бывают) просто начинали придираться к о-пэр, чтобы не говоря причины разорвать отношения. Но были и случаи когда к примеру датская семья имеющая приемного ребенка, который был окружен безмерной любовью и заботой от о-пэр и начал ЕЕ НАЗЫВАТЬ МАМОЙ .... тогда семья позвала эту девушку на семейный совет, сказали что для них этот ребенок ВСЕ, небо, земля, воздух. И что они очень ей благодарны за ее заботу о нем, но!!! они вынуждены отказаться от ее услуг, чтобы не потерять любовь своего ребенка. Они купили ей билеты домой и обратно(чтобы она съездила в отпуск и вернулась уже в новую семью), девушке подобрали другую семью. А они искали возможности сами заботится о ребенке, так как не готовы были делить его любовь с кем либо еще.
Я извиняюсь... если это выглядит как глава из романа, но это просто случай из жизни, который показывает что во всем, в том числе в заботе и любви В ПРОГРАММЕ О-ПЭР нужна разумная достаточность.
